The most radically designed project of China’s most flamboyant real estate developer is largely finished, and the Wangjing area of Beijing’s Chaoyang district will soon feature 3 hump-shaped towers that have been likened to Chinese fans, or ship’s sails.
SOHOÂ Wangjing was designed by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, and consists of three curved towers reaching as high as 200 metres. The project is the highest profile venture from an architectural standpoint, of SOHO China, the developer run by husband and wife team Pan Shiyi and Zhang Xin.
Website Design Boom checked on the development’s progress this week, and captured the following photos.
Pan, the Chairman of SOHO is known as much for his outspoken nature as for his real estate developments. The billionaire developer has more than 16 million followers on China’s Weibo micro-blogging service. Zhang Xin, who serves as SOHO’s CEO, also is known for her love of the spotlight, having beaten out Brad Pitt and other celebrities to acquire a $26 million Manhattan townhouse earlier this year, and has previously touted her life story on America’s 60 minutes news program.
Pan, said in an earlier interview that the design of SOHO Wangjing was meant to evoke the image of Koi (Japanese carp), a traditional Chinese symbol of wealth, luck, health and happiness. When the complex is complete later this year, it will provide 521,265 square metres of  office space, on a 115,392 square metre site.
